Easy Homemade Apple Crisp

There’s nothing quite like a warm, homemade apple crisp on a crisp fall day. This easy apple crisp recipe combines tender cinnamon-spiced apples with a buttery brown sugar and oat topping for the perfect combination of soft, juicy fruit and golden, crunchy goodness.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 6 cups Honeycrisp apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons apple juice (or water)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For the Crisp Topping

  • ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ⅔ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate or a 9×9-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Make the Apple Crisp Topping. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, old-fashioned oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture is evenly moistened and begins to form a crumbly topping. Place the topping in the refrigerator while preparing the apples.
  3. Prepare the Apple Filling. Add the sliced apples to a large mixing bowl. Pour in the apple juice and add the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Gently toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Assemble the Apple Crisp. Transfer the seasoned apples and any juices from the bowl into the prepared baking dish. Spread the apples into an even layer. Remove the topping from the refrigerator and sprinkle it evenly over the apples. For an extra-crispy topping, gently squeeze portions of the mixture together with your fingers to create small clusters before scattering them over the fruit.
  5. Bake. Loosely cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25–30 minutes, or until the apples are tender, the filling is bubbling around the edges, and the oat topping is golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve. Allow the apple crisp to cool for several minutes before serving. The filling will thicken slightly as it cools. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce!
