Creamy Satsuma Orange Posset
This creamy orange posset is a simple, elegant dessert made with heavy cream, sugar, and fresh oranges. The combination creates a silky, rich treat with a bright citrus flavor. It has just a few ingredients and no baking required, so it’s perfect for dinner parties, holiday gatherings, or whenever you’re craving something sweet and citrusy.
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ⅓ cup white sugar
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice (2 satsuma oranges)
- Orange zest from 2 satsuma oranges
- Large pinch of salt
Instructions
- Prepare the Oranges: Wash the oranges thoroughly. Zest the oranges and squeeze fresh juice until you have ¼ cup. If desired, reserve orange halves to use as serving cups. It’s a fun presentation, but requires more time and dedication than pouring into ramekins.
- Heat the Cream Mixture: Pour the heavy cream, sugar, orange zest, and salt into a saucepan. Stir to combine and heat over medium heat until the mixture reaches a gentle boil.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent the cream from sticking or burning.
- Add the Orange Juice: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the fresh orange juice. Continue stirring for about 30 seconds, until the mixture begins to thicken slightly.
- Strain if Desired: For an extra-smooth texture, pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the orange zest.
- Pour into Serving Dishes: Divide the mixture among four small ramekins, jars, or hollowed-out satsuma orange halves. (If you choose to use orange halves, you will need about 8 halves, or 4 satsuma oranges to fill).
- Cool: Allow the posset to cool at room temperature for 20–40 minutes.
- Refrigerate: Cover the serving dishes and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or until the posset is completely set.
- Serve: Serve chilled and enjoy the creamy texture and fresh orange flavor.
Notes
- Use Fresh Oranges: Freshly squeezed orange juice provides the best citrus flavor. Measure the juice carefully for the proper consistency.
- Choose Your Favorite Citrus: Try Cara Cara or blood oranges for a slightly different flavor and beautiful color.
- Adjust the Sweetness: Taste the mixture before chilling and adjust the sugar to your preference.
- Make It Extra Smooth: Strain the mixture before pouring it into serving dishes to remove the orange zest.
- Serve in Orange Halves: For a beautiful presentation, carefully scoop the flesh from halved oranges and use the hollowed peels as serving cups.
- Plan Ahead: This dessert needs at least 6 hours to set, so it’s best to prepare it the day before serving.
- Storage: Store covered in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.
